Millets:ASustainableSourceForCleanEnergy-SamridhiDas8A%u201cThefuturebelongstothosewhoprepareforittoday%u201dThisquotebyMalcolmXcapturestheessenceofinnovationandsustainability.LetusinviteanunexpectedheroinourenergyrevolutionMillets.Milletsoftencalledsupergrainsarerenownedfortheirnutritionandabilitytogrowwellintoughconditions.Buttheyalsoholdpromisetousasasustainablesourceofbiofuelprovidinganalternativeforfossilfuels.Thesciencebehindthesemilletsbeingusedasabiofuelliesinthelignocellulosicbiomasspresentinthesemillets.Thismassisthefibrousmaterialthatisperfectforproducingbioethanol.Inthisprocesstheplantfibersofthemilletsarebrokendownintosugarswhicharethenfermentedtoproduceethanol-acleanerburningfuel.Unliketraditionalbiofuelcropslikecornorsugarcane,milletsrequireminimalwater,pesticidesorfertilizers.Moreovertheycanalsobegrownonmarginallandsprovidingasustainablesourceofenergyproduction.AnexamplesofsuchamilletissweetsorghumitisaclimateresilientcropthatcanbegrownforallfourF%u2019s(Food,Fiber,FodderandFuel).Itisalsoknownasthecameamongcropsforitsexcellentdroughtresistantcharacteristics.Thesemilletsarealsoveryenvironmentallybeneficial.WhatmakesthebiofuelobtainedfromthesemilletsevenmoreexcitingistheirCarbonNeutralityie-theamountofcarbondioxidereleaseduponburningoffuelsisbalancedbytheamountofcarbondioxideabsorbedduringthegrowthoftheseplants.RegardingtheGHGemissions,between1.4to22kgofCarbonDioxideequivalentscanbesaveddependinguponyieldsofthemilletcroplikesweetsorghum.Therefore,reducingtheirimpactuponclimatechange.Additionally,thesemilletscanalsogrowindroughtproneareas,savingapreciouswaterresourceandalsoprotectingbiodiversity.Indiahasplayedamajorroleinthemilletrevolution.Indiabeingthelargestproducerofmilletsisalreadyagloballeaderandbyinvestinginmilletbasedbio-fuelswecouldtackletwocriticalissues1)ReduceFossilFuelDependencebyusingbio-fuelfrommilletswhicharearenew.2)EmpoweringFarmersBycultivatingmilletsforbio=fuelproductionourfarmerswouldgetnewincomestreamsandturnunproductivelandsintoenergyhubs.Althoughtherearesomeproblemsinimplementingthismilletbasedbiofuelsbecauselargescaleproductionofmilletsrequireshighleveltechnologyandalotofcost.Butwiththecontinuoussupportofthegovernmentandtheadvancementsgoingoninthefieldofbiotechnology,thisdreamisbecomingmoreachievable.Inconclusion,milletsnotonlyholdthepotentialtopowerourlivesbuttopowertheentireworld,thesetinygrainscouldholdakeytoagreenerfuture.Here%u2019sapoemsummarizingabouttheundoubtedlypowerfulmillets.\ets:Nature%u2019sPowerhouse\MilletMilletEverywhereGrowingonthetoughestfieldWiththehighestpossibleyieldProtectingusfromdiseaseslikeashieldTheypowerourlivesTheypowerourworldWiththecleanestfuelinhandTheyleadtheworld
